How to Find Your Niche?

How to Find Your Niche?

Lot of people face this challenge of finding their right niche. In fact, I have been facing this challenge myself for quite some time.

There are tons of podcasts, videos available on YouTube and courses being created around this.

Let me chalk out the steps for you on finding your niche. Go through the below steps and write down in a notepad.

    1. What are your skillsets? competencies? Area of Expertise?
    2. Which skillsets have you utilized to solve your problems in the past few years?
    3. What skillsets have you utilized in solving problems for others?
    4. What is your passion or hobbies? Can you Imagine yourself researching on certain questions on the subject and sharing answers with people?
    5. Profitable Niche Markets
    6. Narrow Down Your Niche

What are your skillsets? Competencies? Area of Expertise?

Let’s take my example here. I am good at presentation skills, interpersonal skills, public speaking, coaching and training. I have a good learning agility.

Which skillsets have you utilized to solve your problems in the past few years?

In my professional career, used my learning agility to grasp new skills and did a transition from training and development to learning and development domain. Also did self-coaching, to find out solutions for my problems.

What skillsets have you utilized in solving problems for others?

Used coaching, conducted training workshops and motivational talks to help others in solving their problems.

What is your passion or hobbies? Can you Imagine yourself researching on certain questions on the subject and sharing answers with people?

As per Wikipedia, “Passion is a feeling of intense enthusiasm towards or compelling desire for someone or something. Passion can range from eager interest in or admiration for an idea, proposal, or cause; to enthusiastic enjoyment of an interest or activity; to strong attraction, excitement, or emotion towards a person.”

For me its when during my training or coaching session, participants have AHA moments, that’s when I get excited. It feels like I did a value addition to these people’s lives.

I like going to gym. Not a body builder though. Just trying to be fit. However, I can go on and on talking on the health benefits of working out, diets and workout routines and exercises. And I am sure I would love to do a research on the diets/nutrition, health benefits and sharing the answers with everyone.

The answers to these questions will give you a broader perspective and to drill down your niche.

So, when I did this exercise for myself, I realized Coaching & Fitness are the areas I should focus on.

Any of the two I can easily pick up and start talking and writing about.

Recently, I discovered that I am too fascinated with the whole making money online thing. Hence, started researching how people make money online. Post which, I decided to learn it myself, and change my lifestyle. And in the process also help others to make money online.

Profitable Niche Markets

Many internet gurus have stated that currently online most profitable niches are Health, Wealth & Relationships.

Just check on the answers and see the current niche in the market. Can you utilize your skillset in any of those three niches? If you answer YES! Then its great. If you answer NO, then still not to worry.

Other Niche’s

There are many examples on internet which does not fall in the above three niches but are still growing and carving a niche for themselves. For example, customize t-shirt prints, cosmetics/make up industry, travel and tours and many more.

Do a search on google trends on your topic, this step will help you find your niche. And see if there are any searches being done by people across the globe or in your specific country. The data, or trend will help you decide to whether or not to go ahead with the niche of yours.

Example you did a search on print on demand t-shirts.

Last 5 years data shows there is a trend and people are searching for it. You can also play around the country specific and years too. You can even compare with other product ideas what you have.

Narrow down your niche

Once you decided on your niche, start narrowing it down to a specific smaller niche.

Oh what? C’mon, If I do that I will miss out on lot of my audience. No worries my friend, in fact by narrowing down your niche will make you stand out.

For example, if you have decided Fitness as your niche, then there are so many fitness coaches out there. How will you differentiate yourself from others?

Niche: Fitness (Narrow it down further)

Ask question to yourself fitness coaches for whom? So, you might want to focus on specifics here? Whom do you want to help in that niche? You can’t help everyone.

Maybe you decide, that you will help women lose weight post pregnancy/delivery.

Now this becomes more specific.

“I am a fitness coach who helps women lose weight post pregnancy/delivery.”

This will be your niche.

All your content, courses will be based on this niche.
